Sister recently joined the official chore chart at our house. Jobs stay the same for a month, and some may receive more help than others depending on age and abilities. Allowance is given at the first of every month at the rate of $1 for each year of age. (So an 8-year-old gets $8/month). It does not depend on how well they do the jobs--our fuzzy jar system helps with that. They are required to donate 10% to tithing (for use by our church), and 10% to their own savings account.
We're pretty cheap-o compared to some families, but the kids don't have to buy their own clothes or supplies unless it's something we consider unnecessary or extravagant. I like them to feel a bit deprived and motivated to find ways to make more money, whether that's doing other chores around the house or getting a job when they're older. So far none of them are big spenders.
